GOING SOLAR: SOLAR IMPULSE 2 – BACK IN THE AIR AND BREAKING MORE RECORDS

The newly repaired Solar Impulse 2 has successfully finished the ninth leg of its round-the-world journey after it was grounded in Hawaii for 10 months. The plane touched down at Moffett Airfield in California’s Mountain View on the 23rd of April 2016. This flight saw the Solar Impulse 2 travel over 62 hours across the Pacific Ocean, flying more than 4 000 km without fuel.

The creative solar energy initiative was started to show the potential of solar power technology and encourage people to protect the quality of life by making use of energy efficient renewable energy solutions.

Setting Records

The unique solar powered, electric plane is now three-quarters of the way through its revolutionary journey. While records are still to be verified by the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), during its latest flight, the Solar Impulse team believe the plane broke records for duration, speed, distance, altitude and altitude gain for an electric plane.

The plane reached a maximum altitude of 28 000 feet (8 534 metres), travelling a distance of 4 522 km at an average speed of 65 km/h. The plane produced 1 121 kWh of energy using the 17 000 solar cells located on its wings. Custom-made solar batteries were used to supply electricity at night.

The Solar Power Initiative

“Solar Impulse is showing what we can do with clean technologies,” said pilot and Solar Impulse founder, Bertrand Piccard. “It is more than an aeroplane: it is a concentration of clean technologies, a genuine flying laboratory, and illustrates that solutions exist today to meet the major challenges facing our society”. He added that “a clean revolution is now on the move and people who understand this will be successful in the future.”

The Round-the-World Journey

The final quarter of the journey will see the Solar Impulse 2 travel towards Phoenix, Arizona, where it will cross the United States as it heads towards New York. The aircraft will then make its transatlantic trip to Europe that would eventually see it returning home to Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates.
