Small-Scale Renewable Embedded Generation

How to Become a Distributor of Small-Scale Renewable Embedded Generation

If you have heard of the potential for net metering in South Africa, then you have heard of small-scale renewable embedded generation and what it can do for our energy crises in the country. There certainly are no illusions when it comes to Eskom’s ability to serve the nation and with the country being on high alert so often – and with load shedding happening more often than not – net metering has become a practical option to consider. With every opportunity comes the potential for mismanagement and abuse of the system…and with this in mind, a regulatory framework for distributors must be set in place if net metering is ever to work in South Africa.

How will net metering work?

Homes and businesses can attach a rooftop PV system to their building, which works off solar panel systems. These systems are designed to transfer any excess energy generated to the national grid in return for incentives in the form of reduced rates and rebates. In terms of the regulatory framework for distributors, those who become distributors of net metering can only generate a certain amount of power to be sold to the system – this means that no household can generate more power than they consume.

Why is net metering becoming such a popular option for households nationwide?

Eskom has announced a potential 13% increase in rates from April this year, which will surely affect thousands of households negatively when it comes to finances. At least with a net metering system in place, money can be saved, the national grid can be better supplied and, hopefully, the country will no longer be plunged into nights of darkness and days of no electricity (which can seriously deplete productivity within business environments). The National Energy Regulator has proposed that net metering in South Africa is measured in kilowatt hours instead of in Rands.

  1. Superb website you have here but I was wanting to know if you
knew of any community forums that cover the

Is there any way you can remove people from that service?
    Appreciate it!
