Home solar options

While South Africans have enjoyed some months free of load shedding, Eskom CEO recently told Parliament that the utility is expecting rolling blackouts to return during winter of 2016. That means that South Africans will have to take a page out of Game of Thrones and begin to fear winter. Whether we’re talking about businesses or homes, load shedding can wreak havoc, leaving people feeling like they have hopped in a time machine and returned to the dark ages.

An increasing number of people have seen the light (of the sun), and turned to solar power as a solution to our energy crisis. Large scale outdoor photovoltaic (PV) systems have started popping up around the country, and many homes have turned to solar panel rooftop installation.

Solar power not only leaves the planet smiling, but also allows you to laugh all the way to the bank, as you enjoy all the saving benefits. Besides cutting energy consumption, this long-term energy solution allows businesses and homes to enjoy energy reliability all year round.

When searching for household solar solutions, the first decision you will have to make is what type of system you are after. Let’s break it down into the three major types: Stand-alone, Grid-connected and Hybrid.

Stand-alone solar system: Also known as off-grid, this system operates independently from the national grid. These systems make use of solar storage batteries to store generated power, allowing your home to remain powered at night or during terrible weather.

Grid-connected solar system: These tend to be the most popular type of solutions found within South Africa, operating in conjunction with the national grid. Grid-connected systems are great for reducing your monthly electricity bill, and can potentially save you from load shedding if solar storage batteries are added.

Hybrid solar system: This can best be described as the best of both, either as a grid-connected system with extra battery storage or as off-grid with utility backup.
