Eskom turns to solar power to beat load shedding

Eskom has finally begun to acknowledge the huge solar power potential that South Africa has, and its ability to reduce stress on our already strained national grid. South Africa’s Department of Energy announced earlier this year that it would be expanding opportunities for the private sector to contribute to the production of power, bringing with it a number of promising solar power projects to look forward to.

To date, more than 6 000 Megawatts (MW) of electricity has been procured from 37 renewable energy independent power producers (IPP), with a number of solar projects in South Africa still on the horizon.

When it comes to Eskom and renewable energy, one of the most exciting projects recently announced is the 1 500 MW solar project that will soon be launched in the Northern Cape. This project is added to the growing list of renewable energy programmes, helping South Africa to stamp their name as one of the global leaders of renewable energy.

Renewable programmes leading to broader empowerment

While electrification and grid support is obviously two of the main goals of these programmes, broader empowerment is also an important focus. Job creation, economic development, social upliftment and broad based economic empowerment are important features.

Soventix playing its part

Through the Department of Energy’s Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (REIPPP), Soventix has been able to construct a number of large scale solar parks around the country, allowing us to feed clean energy back into the national grid.

Soventix has also played a key role in developing a number of commercial high output energy systems. These systems provide our clients with energy reliability and electricity savings. Our latest completed projects include a 131.04 kWp solar system at ACA Threads in Cape Town and a 40.29 kWp system at Quiver Tree, Stellenbosch.

We are firm believers that no project is ever too small, having also provided a number of homes with solar panel installation.
